Plastic surgery is concerned with repairing and restoring skin and tissue damage, whether present from birth congenital or caused by disease or injury. It aims to restore the best possible function and appearance. To do this purely for aesthetic reasons is known as cosmetic surgery.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is concerned with:
removing or improving the appearance of birthmarks, moles, scars, tattoos, warts, chlosterol, skin deposition (xanthelasmas) and other blemishes, correcting disfiguring congenital defects, and correcting defects of appearance at the request of the patient (elective cosmetic surgery).

Examples of elective cosmetic surgery include a face- lift (rhytidectomy), nose reshaping (rhinoplasty), correction of ear defects (otoplasty) and removal of redundant eyelid skin (blepharoplasty).

The surgeon may carry out the following techniques.

• Removal of the top layers of skin to reduce superficial defects and foreign bodies (dermabrasion).
• Peeling the face chemically using alpha-hydroxy acids, to enhance and rejuvenate the skin.
• Implantation of hair to remove bald spots from the scalp.
• Insertion of silicone breast implants (augmentation mammoplasty).
• Removal of excess breast skin and fat (reduction mammoplasty).
• Various kinds of body-contour surgery, such as liposuction (fat removal) on thighs, buttocks or stomach.
• Removal of unwanted hair, tattoos or threadveins using laser surgery.
• Plumping of the skin, using cosmetic dermal fillers (cells or tissue) such as collagen or Restylane.
• Temporary relaxation of facial muscles with a highly diluted and purified form of botulinum toxin (Botox).

Both cosmetic and reconstructive services are offered in my practice.  My professor, Dr. Ralph Millard, taught me that the best plastic surgeons incorporate both.  The cosmetic surgery teaches precision and finesse;  the reconstructive surgery teaches creativity.  A Plastic Surgeon can't have one without the other.
